Energy is the core of the Universe. Each significant scientific discovery in the field of energy is a step towards the future and a substantial contribution to the welfare of human civilisation.

• The Global Energy International Prize is a new scientific award for outstanding theoretical, experimental and applied research, development, inventions and discoveries in the field of energy development and power generation.
• The Global Energy Prize, which was founded in 2002 has been awarded annually since 2003. The idea of an International energy prize was put forward by a group of well-known Russian scientists led by the Nobel prize winner Zhores Alferov and was backed by the scientific community as well as by the largest Russian power producing companies. The initiative was approved and endorsed by the President of Russia.
• Being aware of its huge responsibility for the development of science in the world and for the progress of mankind in the sphere of power production and consumption, the Russian Federation became initiator of the Global Energy International Prize.
• The development of civilization has reached a point where all countries of the world should join together their in efforts to cope with global challenges first of all in sustaining progress in the sphere of energy production and use. The Global Energy Prize is called to promote:

• international cooperation in conducting fundamental and applied scientific research in the field of power engineering;
• involvement of the leading scientists of the world to solving the most urgent problems of today in the field of power engineering;
• international social recognition for the discoveries and inventions of scientists and research teams.

• The Global Energy Prize is a unique international scientific award. It is the first prize in the world's fundamental and applied science to be awarded for epoch-making discoveries and outstanding achievments in the sphere of energy and power generation.
• According to the founder members, the International energy prize should cover all scientific directions relating to existing and prospective kinds of energy and energy carriers.
• The prize is awarded for scientific achievements in the field of energy and power engineering in the following main areas:

• fundamental research, discoveries and inventions providing new opportunities in the development of power engineering;
• theoretical studies, discoveries and inventions opening new energy sources and opportunities for their use;
• applied inventions, studies and technical improvements providing an essential increase in energy efficiency;
• research, discoveries and inventions that have led to the use of new methods for the transformation of energy and bringing a significant contribution to the solution of ecological and environmental protection issues;
• research, discoveries and inventions resulting in breakthrough solutions for energy saving and transmission issues.

• When awarding the Prize, unconditional preference will be given to works that benefit humanity as a whole, and which testify to its pronounced humanistic trend.
• The annual fund of the Prize exceeds US$750,000. In 2005 the prize money was US$1,000,000.
• The prize fund is formed and funded by the leading Russian companies - JSC "Gazprom", Russian JSC "UES of Russia" and JSC "Surgutneftegas". These major power corporations acting as founders of the Global Energy International Prize have undertaken to finance the Prize on a permanent basis. The founders, however, shall by no means influence the selection of Prize winners.
• In order to carry out activities relating to the establishment and annual organizational preparation and the holding of the scientific contest and selection of the Prize winners, as well as providing  financing for  the project, the founders have formed a number of authorized bodies: Board of Trustees of the Prize, International Prize Award Committee, and the Non-for-Profit Foundation "Global Energy".
• The Board of Trustees of the Prize will supervise the activities of the Foundation and other authorized bodies of the Prize. The board includes representatives of governmental authorities of the Russian Federation, public and private organizations and Russian Academy of Sciences.
• The International Prize Award Committee was formed to ensure a high scientific level and impartiality for the contest and selection of winners. The Committee is composed of world famous scientists, Nobel Prize winners and heads of leading Research Centres.
• Under the patronage of the President of Russia, the Prize award ceremony was attended by top statesmen of the Russian Federation and the amount of the Prize fund will rank "Global Energy" International Prize among the most prestigious international scientific awards.
• Global Energy International Prize will not only make a substantial contribution to the world scientific-and-technological advancement, but will also be conducive to the creation of a new image of Russia reflecting its progressive role in the development of science, economics, and environmental protection.
